Picture for blog post Faucet Fixes: What to Do When You Have a Leaky Faucet

Faucet Fixes: What to Do When You Have a Leaky Faucet

      Friday, November 20, 2020

There will come a time in every person's life when a crucial decision has to be made - take on a leaking faucet alone or call for professional backup? We put this comprehensive guide together to help you tackle a leaking faucet on your own, and to help you recognise when a situation is dire enough to warrant giving a professional plumber a call before water damage sets in.

That one drop probably costs a fraction of a cent, but those fractions add up. Image Source

Damage Control Paying some attention to where a leak is coming from will help you to conduct a quick and effective repair: a dripping faucet may entail disassembly of the fixture to replace a defective component, while a slowly leaking pipe connection could be patched with a few rounds of plumbing tape, but persistently leaking pipe connections likely require the disassembly of piping - which should only be done by a professional plumber.

The first and most crucial phase in the management of any disaster is to limit the damage. If you are faced with a persistently dripping faucet, whether it is an intermittent drip or a torrential waterfall, the first and safest thing to do before attempting any repairs is to locate and shut off the water supply for the affected fixture. The last thing anybody wants is for that trickling leak to turn into an unplanned fountain once the fixture comes off.

This is not the kind of water feature you want in your house. Image Source

Disrupting Supply Sink faucets tend to have their separate supply valves located directly beneath the countertops, so shutting off the water supply for these fixtures is often as simple as opening the cabinets under the sink and manually turning the valves clockwise (right turn to close or tighten and left turn to open or loosen). Other fixtures such as showers, tubs, commodes, and ablutions may not have independent supply valves, or their shut-off valves may not be visible, so locating them may require a familiarity with the inner workings of your property.

If the water supply valve for a specific fixture cannot be located, or if the leak in question comes from a pipe connection rather than a faucet, one can always fall back on shutting off the water supply valve located just after the water meter on a landed property, or in the cold water riser of a high-rise development.

Look for one of these on your property and turn it clockwise to stop the flooding. Image Source

Site Preparations With a leaking pipe or faucet identified and the water supply interrupted, one can begin to prepare the area for repairs. Preparations should entail wrapping the teeth of pliers or wrenches with thick packing tape to prevent scratching fixtures, blocking drain openings with a rag to prevent the accidental loss of parts, and setting out a flat surface for placing disassembled parts.

Because finding this little guy on the floor is less fun. Image Source

Affecting Repairs As most water-dispensing fixtures and their pipes are composed of metallic alloys, leaks may present from imperfect gaps or the worn threads of connections between metal parts, especially in old pipe connections. Slow drips coming out of these pipe connections can be temporarily resolved with a few rounds of Teflon plumbing tape around the joint, but symptoms may reappear as pipe connections continue to deteriorate over time. If you find yourself continuously patching leaking connections along the same length of piping, this would be a sign to call in the professionals to replace the pipes.

Just a few turns around a leaking pipe connection with Teflon tape, plumber's tape, or pipe thread sealing tape should do the trick - at least for small leaks. Image Source

If the leak does not originate from a pipe connection but rather from a fixture itself, the most likely reason could be traced to an unassuming piece of synthetic rubber that plumbers call an 'O-ring'. Most faucets for homes are fitted with O-rings that come in a standard range of sizes, meaning that getting a replacement is a simple matter of bringing the defective O-ring to your neighbourhood hardware store.

An example of what the O-ring in your faucet may look like. Image Source

Replacing the O-ring is a relatively laborious task involving prying off a fixture’s decorative caps with a blunt screwdriver and removing a variety of metal and plastic components to get to the O-ring, which necessitates taping over the teeth of tools to prevent scratching a fixture’s finishes. As there are many different ways of putting water-dispensing fixtures together, the task of replacing an O-ring can be made a little easier by having the manual for the affected fixture on hand. In lieu of a generic manual, we found a couple of videos detailing the process of fixture disassembly for your reference.

Inspections Professional plumbers advise returning the water supply to a repaired fixture gradually, as the sudden change in pressure could cause another leak or even damage the internal components of your fixtures beyond repair. To check on your work, open the water supply valve slowly by turning the handle counter-clockwise, then operate the fixture as normal while observing for leaks.

Slow leaks from pipe connections should be easily resolved by following these steps - but if a fixture continues to present leaks after replacing the O-ring, careful study of the fixture’s manual would be required to determine if other components need replacing. The options after this point would entail getting replacement components from the fixture’s manufacturer, or replacing the fixture entirely if multiple components are suspected to be defective. Either way, we highly recommend consulting a professional before expending any significant sums of money on replacing fixtures.

Vanity Flair: 5 His & Hers Vanity Countertop Ideas for Modern Bathrooms

      Friday, November 20, 2020

Some reading this may have experienced this first-hand: you’re up in a rush to get ready for the day - and as much as your heart surges at the sight of your loved one, you find your schedule stalled as your significant other is in the midst of an unreasonably lengthy grooming ritual at the master bathroom’s only sink. In the interest of keeping things cordial in the bathroom, we went ahead and listed five ideas for incorporating a second sink.

Diverse Influences Interior design by: FIX Design Solutions

Seemingly disparate influences are brought together in this bathroom decorated by FIX Design Solutions, the result is a lightweight and eclectic ensemble suitable for the typical sizes of bathrooms in modern homes. Generous elliptical mirrors hang in a tight formation above a pair of farmhouse-style sinks, while the white aprons contrast against a background of black tile in monochromatic fashion.

Symbolic Arrangement Interior design by: Latitude Design

Just as two halves make a whole, the double sinks occupy a circular vanity in the centre of this space decorated by Latitude Design, proving that the bathroom counter need not necessarily be along the walls. Acting as both a practical feature and as a visually grounding element in the centre of the space, the accompanying mirrors are embedded into a partition that is held above the counter, resulting in the mirrors appearing to float across the diameter of the round counter.

Elegantly Unbound Interior design by: Desigva Interior

In this bathroom decorated by Desigva Interior, a protracted length of countertop is used to host twin basins with ample space in between, producing an expansive and luxurious ambiance. The elegantly simplistic space is complemented by an ethereal glow spilling onto the polished stone, the same light from recesses beneath the mirror forming an intangible frame around the vanity.

Framed in Wood Interior design by: MDS

With wall space at a premium in most bathrooms, countertops may have to be kept in check with the addition of other elements. In this space decorated by MDS Interiors, the vanity is bookended by wooden cabinetry to contain the length of countertop within a frame, and to keep it from overwhelming the rest of the bathroom.

Composed for Opulence Interior design by: Casa Indah

When ideal proportions and luxurious materials converge, a bathroom evoking imagery of an upscale hotel emerges. The vanity in this bathroom is a relatively simplistic arrangement consisting of a pair of wide basins presented against a backdrop of marbled stone, with a countertop composed of plain black stone and cabinet doors of dark wood providing the necessary contrast.

Picture for blog post Bath Beauty: 5 Contemporary Bathroom Trends

Bath Beauty: 5 Contemporary Bathroom Trends

      Friday, November 20, 2020
There are not many bathrooms deserving of a long-lasting memory, and while some are easily forgettable spaces, there are bathrooms in existence that remain in mind long after they have been seen. This time around, we take a look at the five most memorable bathrooms we have seen recently, to attempt a breakdown of what makes these largely neutral-coloured spaces spectacular.
      1. Vintage Lines Interior design by: Yong Studio

The windows of a previous era are updated for the present times with the glass panes exchanged for pieces of wood, the horizontal lines repeated in a border that simultaneously serves as the footprint of the shower's partial enclosure and separates the modern freestanding bathtub from the rest of the bathroom. The deliberate selection of fixtures powder coated in carbon is echoed in the architectural considerations: the black pipe window frames and a panel of Nero Marquina providing the basis for the monochromatic palette.

      2. Solemn Grace Interior design by: Fix Interior

The monochrome fixtures and countertop of this bathroom are elegantly framed in grey and cream tiles that have been laid in a standard grid arrangement. The somber ambience is enlivened with gilded portrait frames and warm yellow lighting, contributing to a golden glow that is reflected across the space to bridge the gap between the monochromatic fixtures and neutral architectural finishes.

      3. Sunlit Decadence Interior design by: Nu Infinity

A monochromatic palette is applied to redefine the modern luxury of a sunlit bath - with a freestanding tub resting in the centre of a glass-enclosed air well, framed in black square pipe and smooth matte black tiles. Serving as both a practical consideration and as a tropical element to counter the decidedly modern decor, dark wood is incorporated into a deck floor beneath the tub.

      4. Natural Accents Interior design by: X-Dimension Design

In a space decked with black and grey stone, a few limited flourishes with pale wood serve to alleviate the seriousness of the decor. Wood is utilised in the shelving and mounting background for the mirror to add warming layers to the coldness of a counter tiled in black stone.

      5. Rustic Vibe Interior design by: Yong Studio

With just a few splashes of natural materials, such as the addition of wood and wicker weave, this largely white bathroom is gifted a mature and warm personality that would have been absent in the face of the white walls and grey floor tiles. The modern pendant lights hanging from the ceiling in the corner exude an inviting glow in conjunction with the vertical wood pieces on the wall - the decorative feature  deliberately extended to affect the light on more than one plane.

Bathe in Light: 5 Bathroom Lighting Tips to Enliven Your Bathing Space

      Friday, November 20, 2020
Lighting for the bathroom is often an afterthought. It's actually important to plan it right so that you can achieve the ambience you want. These five lighting tips for the bathroom will show you how to get lighting up and running beautifully in your bathing space. 1. The Right Lighting Proper and plentiful light in the bathroom has many useful benefits. That includes setting your circadian rhythms that are an important part in over-all health, elevating one's mood, allowing bright illumination for the washing and grooming duties, and more. Most importantly is that it is critical for safety, especially for the elderly or disabled since the bathroom is where 80 percent of falls happen. 2. Minimize Glare If you are bothered by glare, use fixtures that mask the actual light such as deeply recessed downlights or up-lights or dimmers to make adjustments as needed. Also helpful are tubular fluorescent lights with a frosted lens to reduce the glare. 3. Correct Measurements Lighting recommended for the dressing area is eye-level provided by fixtures at least 30 inches apart with a minimum of 60 watts. That can be accomplished with chain-hung pendants or wall sconces that provide light on both sides of the face for grooming and applying cosmetics. 4. Night Lights Night lighting is essential to safely maneuver and prevent falls in the middle of the night. Bright overhead lights can be disruptive and blinding when one's eyes are adjusted to darkness. Provide a low-wattage lamp, or one that responds to motion, or create one by illuminating the toe-space area below the vanity with a linear lighting system. 5. Accentuating the Space A decorative light fixture that is suspended from the ceiling gives any room an elegant touch at the same time that it is adding extra light. Article courtesy of Patriot LED

In this space decorated by MDS Interiors, the vanity is bookended by wooden cabinetry to contain the length of countertop within a frame, and to keep it from overwhelming the rest of the bathroom.
