Gold Rush: Swaths of Energising Gold Enliven This Exquisite Home

      Friday, November 20, 2020

A new home, for a new family – the stunning duplex apartment located in Sunway Damansara is home to the, stillfairly- newlyweds, actor Fahrin Ahmad, 37 and Elena Eleas, 38. With smiles all around and colours that really enhance the voluminous apartment, the happy couples’ aura reflects the cheerful décor, as we talk about their new home over some brunch.

Thanks to Dulux Paints, Fahrin and Elena now have a space that they love and can settle into, building their family. Deciding together to undergo major renovations, they transformed the space together creating the home of their dreams.

Beginning their renovations with the colours, Fahrin and Elena collaborated with Dulux, using Dulux’s colour palette from ‘Colour of the Year 2016. Creating an exciting interior, Fahrin boasted about just how much the colour transformed the space, saying, “compared to what it was previously, we now have lighter and brighter colours which make it look so refreshed. Spaces feel larger and more energised, and visually, it’s just more dynamic. It’s amazing what the right colours can do to a space.”

To invigorate and energise the living spaces, Dulux Ambiance Linen Warm Gold 35YY 59/533 and Dulux Ambiance Pearl Glo 35YY 59/533 were used on the doubleheight wall in the living area. The paint effects of the Linen is inspired by natural and rustic linen, making this wall stand out with a unique textured fabric effect. With natural light streaming in through the large windows reflecting off the paint, the living space radiates with beauty and luminosity.

In their spacious master bedroom, Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2016 - Monarch Gold 20YY 36/370 and Honey Moon 52YY 89/117 are used creating an elegant yet tranquil space. Being Elena’s favourite colour, she found furnishing her home around the colour easy, integrating neutral tones to contrast against the gold as well enhancing it at the same time. Both Fahrin and Elena are over moon with Dulux’s Colour of The Year 2016 palette,  as it suits their style perfectly.

So, now that they’ve renovated their home together, what would be their best piece of advice for homeowners looking to do a bit of renovation?

“Based on our experience, when choosing colours and paint, you need to follow the experts’ advice. Listen to what they have to say because they are after all professionals and they know about these things. The best thing about Dulux is that they offer free colour consultation services. They will help you choose the right colour scheme and colours especially for your space. Always refer to colour palettes too – Dulux has an app which allows you to browse through their catalogue of colours, so that helps when deciding on a colour."

With a beautiful new home for the amiable couple, Fahrin shared some last words: “We would like to thank you Dulux for helping us create our   home! Thanks for always entertaining our requests."

Prints Charming: How to Use Colourful Prints and Patterns in the Bedroom

      Friday, November 20, 2020

Besides the limitless range of artfully hand-drawn or computer-rendered designs, wallpapers are preferred for their ease of replacement - in the event that a particular print gets a little stale, it can be removed and replaced with other wall finishes or a wallpaper bearing an alternative motif. For those who enjoy using colourful prints on their walls, we took stock of how interior designers use wallpapers and narrowed down a range of five inspirational uses here.

Contrasted Contours Interior design by: Desigva Design

Decorated by Desigva Design, this bedroom utilises a wallpaper that is relatively restrained in terms of colour and motif in order to paint a meditative interior in calming neutral shades. A wallpaper bearing wave-forms is applied above the headboard to mirror the pale shade of wood on the adjoining walls, and to playfully echo the horizontal lines of detail across the bedroom fittings. The selection of wallpaper in a similar shade as the wood in the space imbues the bedroom with a serene ambiance.

Thematic Emphasis Interior design by: Casa Indah Design

A vivid tropical landscape is painted in this bedroom decorated by Casa Indah Design. On their own: the wooden headboard, the intriguing vintage lamp, and the burlap rope swing posing as a bedside table may represent disparate elements that are only loosely related in terms of the common material used at their bases - but with the addition of a busy jungle scene on wallpaper, the space takes on the tone of an adventurous trek.

Harvest Motif Interior design by: Design Base

Occasionally, one may find the use of wallpapers bearing complex patterns to be unnecessary - as demonstrated in this bedroom decorated by Design Base. A simplistic repeating pattern is used here to depict leaves in various states of decay, the illustration evoking the colourful months between the end of summer and the advent of winter. The autumn ambiance is punctuated with a throw rug vaguely reminiscent of a ground covered in fallen leaves, while elements of the countryside are invoked with the wicker weave headboard  in addition to the other white finishes and decorations.

Iconic Representation Interior design by: Design Base

Decorative prints do not necessarily need to be all-encompassing and complete with detail. Another example of a simulated landscape is created by Design Base in this bedroom - but rather than rendering a panorama in full detail, the natural scenery is instead implied with various shades of green and a lone tree represented in caricature.

Emerald Opulence Interior design by: Regal Violet

An otherwise plain space is transformed into a classically-leaning bedroom with the use of wallpaper bearing an intricate floral motif and saturated in the shade of a clear emerald. While the beryl tone vaguely resembles a swathe of foliage, the borderline-Baroque pattern bestows this bedroom with an underlying layer of elegance to complement the cabriolet legs of the dressing table and the oval back of the accompanying chair.

Decorating for Elegance with Versatile White

      Friday, November 20, 2020

Whether the reasons are grounded in physics, biology, or culture, the colour white represents purity for most people — and as demonstrated by Isaac Newton and the album art for Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon — white is perhaps the most adaptable of colours, being composed of all the other hues of visible light. Given the association of white with purity, and our common understanding as to what makes the colour so universally compatible with other hues, many choose it as the predominant shade of our homes. In our attempt to explore the various effects of colour, we take a closer look at a range of spaces that have been saturated in white.

      Living Room

Where one would normally imagine a space monotonously saturated in white, the quality of white in this seating lounge is instead made intriguingly varied with a range of whites applied — from the pristine plaster ceilings, largely unadorned and untouched walls, to the subtly cream floor tiles. A few choice accents appoint the space to add variability to the range of shades while being emphasised by the pale background: a panel of white marble flanked by reflective metals adds a shimmering layer of luxury and a few playfully coloured throw cushions provide some mirth.

The reliance on white provides visual emphasis and brings attention to the few coloured decorations and reflective finishes in this space.
      Dining Room

The use of off-white upholstery and subtly pinstriped curtains against the pale background of this space elegantly contains the black glass and steel dining table against the sheer-covered windows and cream floor tiles. The resulting visual illusion diminishes the presence of the dining surface, making the arrangement appear to blend with the surroundings in an effort to preserve empty floor space. As with the seating lounge, a coloured element in the form of a blooming stem of purple orchid placed in a turquoise and brown glass vase takes advantage of the white background to create its own emphasis and to provide the space with a visual breath of fresh air.

      Kitchen

The majority of modern kitchens are rendered almost entirely in white for the sake of maintaining an immaculate appearance. This common practice also creates a versatile background that will accommodate and complement appliances in a range of colours and finishes — so you don't necessarily have to hunt down appliances that match each other. The pictured kitchen exhibits a classically inspired décor that is largely unaffected by the array of modern appliances, due in part to the white of the background lending itself well in combination with other colours,

      Bedroom

The use of white in bedrooms more often than not results in an overtly feminine space, especially when combined with intricate wall coverings, sheer curtains, and classical details such as a capitonné leather headboard. The pictured bedroom arrangement utilises white less as a background and more as an accent colour, but the prevailing theme and underlying principles are the same — the application of white brings together the  disparate hues of the space.

Picture for blog post Enigmatic Bedrooms Decorated With Purple

      Enigmatic Bedrooms Decorated With Purple

      Friday, November 20, 2020

From the sea snail shells found along the ancient Phoenician coastlines of Tyre to the togas of Roman senators, and on to as recent a time as Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, the colour purple has been associated with mystery, power, royalty – and the height of bravery in the case of the Purple Heart. Despite the connotations, spaces painted in purple are relatively rare to come by – especially in this age of neutral-coloured interiors and compact spaces. But the results are undeniably awe-inspiring whether purple is applied as an accent or as a base colour. To illustrate the sensuous effects of purple – and perhaps to inspire you to try something different in the bedroom – we bring your attention to a selection of bedrooms brought to deeply soothing and enigmatic levels with the mere addition of violet-coloured light or materials.

      Beguiling Accent
      Interior design by: Turn Design

Perhaps the very first and easiest thing to try when experimenting with purple, or any other bold shade, is to inject the colour with the aid of a lighting fixture. Utilising ultraviolet bulbs intended for water purification systems would not be recommended for health reasons – ultraviolet light of the UVB variety is a germ killer and equivalent to sunlight in terms of the damage it can cause – but "black-lights", UVA bulbs, or even regular bulbs tinted purple will provide a harmless wash of violet-coloured light. This equivalent of dipping one's toe into unfamiliar waters enables slight adjustments – leading to possible results such as the pictured bedroom decorated by Turn Design. The purple glow here serves as a tentative accent for the neutral-coloured space, delivered to the sunlit side of the bed via a pair of bedside lamps.

      Absolute Saturation
Interior design by: Space In Design

If the alluring quality of purple illumination has won you over, you may find yourself surprised by the delightful effects of a predominantly white room fully saturated in violet light. As demonstrated by Space In Design with the pictured bedroom, the architectural finishes of the walls and ceiling have been deliberately left featureless and white in order to extend the reach of purple light. The result is that all the plain white surfaces are rendered intriguing with a fluorescent sheen, while slivers of white and yellow illumination are used to segment the background and provide the space with a measure of visual depth.

      Prominent Display
      Interior design by: Jashen Interior

If you are looking for more control over the introduction of bold shades like purple in the bedroom, consider utilising fabrics dyed in your prefered shade of violet instead of attempting to fine-tune the highly variable effects of lighting. As demonstrated by Jashen Interior in the pictured bedroom, the introduction of purple is done through carpeting and drapery in light and dark shades, securing the colour's place in the white space regardless of the quality of light. The net effect of this combination is one of mutual support – the white background brings attention to the purple accents while the various shades of violet lend the crisp white space a contour of uplifting opulence.

      Background Flavour
      Interior design by: Surface R

With some comfort in its balanced use, one could take the saturation of purple to the maximum by applying various shades of violet in architectural finishes. The result of painting both the walls and the decorative headboard in the same shade of purple is a cohesive background that is instantly soothing to the eye, as in the pictured bedroom designed by Surface R, while the contrasting of dark wood flooring and a sprinkling of neutral coloured planes against the purple background creates a space that simultaneously speaks of fun-loving vibes and regal poise.
