Whether the reasons are grounded in physics, biology, or culture, the colour white represents purity for most people — and as demonstrated by Isaac Newton and the album art for Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon — white is perhaps the most adaptable of colours, being composed of all the other hues of visible light. Given the association of white with purity, and our common understanding as to what makes the colour so universally compatible with other hues, many choose it as the predominant shade of our homes. In our attempt to explore the various effects of colour, we take a closer look at a range of spaces that have been saturated in white.

Living Room

Where one would normally imagine a space monotonously saturated in white, the quality of white in this seating lounge is instead made intriguingly varied with a range of whites applied — from the pristine plaster ceilings, largely unadorned and untouched walls, to the subtly cream floor tiles. A few choice accents appoint the space to add variability to the range of shades while being emphasised by the pale background: a panel of white marble flanked by reflective metals adds a shimmering layer of luxury and a few playfully coloured throw cushions provide some mirth.

The reliance on white provides visual emphasis and brings attention to the few coloured decorations and reflective finishes in this space.

Dining Room

The use of off-white upholstery and subtly pinstriped curtains against the pale background of this space elegantly contains the black glass and steel dining table against the sheer-covered windows and cream floor tiles. The resulting visual illusion diminishes the presence of the dining surface, making the arrangement appear to blend with the surroundings in an effort to preserve empty floor space. It's really fun and enjoyable to pick out art pieces for our homes. But once you have your favourite art work, how do you display it at home? Framing it up is a good way to do so, but there are actually many ways to arrange a good piece of art to blend in with your interior style. Here are some ideas to easily display your art pieces in stylish ways. 1 Make your art piece a part of your living room's overall style. In this example, the black and white print beautifully complements the sofa setting. Art can even be in the form of pillows like the singular colourful piece on the sofa, which creates an immediate focal point. 2 Affix open shelves on the walls to display your art. Placing it next to a mirror also adds depth and gives your wall a focal element. 3 You can also use your favourite prints to enliven empty corners in the house by creating a collection of displays on top of a console. 4 You don't need to frame up prints all the time. If your living space is on the small side, it can be difficult to carve out a designated spot exclusively for dining. However, it would be even more confining to forego this essential home comfort. No one wants to be forced to eat every meal standing up or with a plate balanced on their laps--and even if they do, it shouldn’t always be the case. Shared family meals are an important ingredient in a healthy lifestyle, even when the family consists of just two people or one person simply having guests over from time to time. Here are some ideas on how to create a cozy dining area when space is at a premium: Make the area serve double duty There's no reason why the dining nook can't also be a work space, a prep table, a gaming surface, or all the above. Just be sure to clear away anything that isn't dining-related when it's time for dinner – it doesn't count if the laptop is still balanced on the edge of the table. Choose furniture wisely Obviously, a dining table that seats six (complete with wing-back chairs) is out of the question, but there are plenty of other attractive options out there for those with limited space. To name just a few:

• Low, narrow trestle tables
• Benches or banquettes (some of these will even have additional storage underneath, providing more bang for your buck)
• Round, bistro-style tables (even ones that are meant for patio use can work well in a small space)
• Stools that fit easily underneath whichever table you choose
• Folding tables and chairs that can be stored elsewhere when the meal is over

Paint in light colors Neutrals and light pastels will help to "air out" more cramped areas even if the rest of the room is painted in a darker shade. A light accent wall could be just the ticket. If the furniture can be painted as well, choose either the same color or a complementary hue to round out the look. Opt for shelves instead of cupboards In small kitchens, shelves can be a dream come true--they open the flow of the room and provide storage for just about anything the homemaker can think of. If a renovation on this scale isn't in the cards, simply removing a few of the cupboard doors will work wonders. Think mirrors The dining nook is the perfect place for that extra mirror you weren't sure what to do with, as the reflection will provide the illusion of more space. If you don't have one to spare, invest in an inexpensive one that will suit your tastes. Use the shape of the room to your advantage For long, narrow spaces, choose a table with a corresponding shape and benches that will fit easily underneath. If the dining area is to take up a corner of the room, shake up the geometry with a round table and a banquette that fits against the wall. The idea is for the pieces to look like they belong without sacrificing style and function. Don't forget the tape measure Know the dimensions of the space you're looking to fill and bring the measuring tape along on any shopping expeditions. Besides the limitless range of artfully hand-drawn or computer-rendered designs, wallpapers are preferred for their ease of replacement - in the event that a particular print gets a little stale, it can be removed and replaced with other wall finishes or a wallpaper bearing an alternative motif. For those who enjoy using colourful prints on their walls, we took stock of how interior designers use wallpapers and narrowed down a range of five inspirational uses here.

Contrasted Contours Interior design by: Desigva Design

Decorated by Desigva Design, this bedroom utilises a wallpaper that is relatively restrained in terms of colour and motif in order to paint a meditative interior in calming neutral shades. A wallpaper bearing wave-forms is applied above the headboard to mirror the pale shade of wood on the adjoining walls, and to playfully echo the horizontal lines of detail across the bedroom fittings. The selection of wallpaper in a similar shade as the wood in the space imbues the bedroom with a serene ambiance.

A vivid tropical landscape is painted in this bedroom decorated by Casa Indah Design.
